I wish I could have spent a year just digging into the contradictory history of the Polish village of Kolno, but since Maria spent such a short time here, and as an infant no less, I couldn’t justify that kind of investment. I relied instead on the deep researches of Nathan Apkon at Jewishgen.org, sometimes dipping down into his extensive bibliography to read more.

Zack and I particularly enjoyed reading their “Memorial Book,” which includes first-hand accounts from prewar witnesses. Zack’s visual imagination was particularly inspired by the descriptions of the Purim carnival parades, which he brings so vividly to life on pages 16-19.
